Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at angela@woodshopwednesday.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We’re a small husband-and-wife business, and each stock is handcrafted by Justin from start to finish. Because of the level of detail and craftsmanship involved, these can’t be mass-produced — they’re made one at a time with a lot of care.

Since everything is made by one person, delays can occasionally happen if we get backed up or life circumstances come up. That’s why we quote a longer lead time, but we always aim to finish sooner when possible. If we ever expect to go past the quoted lead time, we’ll reach out and keep you updated.

Yes! Sometimes our website doesn’t show any stock available because we’re busy working on custom builds. We’re just a husband-and-wife team, so we occasionally get a little backed up — but we’re always working hard to keep making customs and adding more stocks to the site.

Walnut (Black/American) and mahogany (Sapele) are the most suitable choices due to their stability and medium density. This provides an excellent balance of strength and weight, while still offering a naturally beautiful grain pattern and a traditional look and feel.

Wood density can vary depending on the specific tree and where the blank is cut from. In general, the center of the tree (heartwood) is denser than the outer sections. Curly walnut also tends to be slightly denser than our standard walnut.

Other woods we offer—such as white oak, zebrawood, and padauk—are significantly higher in density. These options will result in a heavier stock, but they also provide increased durability.

As described above, the wood species will affect the overall weight of the stock. With mahogany and walnut, the stock weight is typically the same, or slightly less than the factory Ruger stock (1lb. 10oz). Hardwoods such as white oak, zebrawood, and padauk will add noticeable weight compared to the factory stock (2+ lb.).

Some shooters actually prefer a heavier stock, since it helps balance the Ruger PC Carbine (which is often considered front-heavy) and can also provide a smoother shooting experience by reducing the felt recoil that’s common with blowback-style firearms.

Yes, but the wood species must be suitable and stable (properly dried to an acceptable moisture content). Some exotic woods (such as Teak ) cannot be used due to their high silica content, which is extremely hard on tooling. Certain hardwoods (including some maples, hickory, cherry, and other dense heartwoods) can also be very dense and more prone to splintering, chipping, or tear-out during machining.

Please email us to discuss the wood you’d like to use for your project. We do not offer credit for customer-supplied wood, as it requires additional setup and processing time.

These wood species are difficult to source and are only available in limited quantities. Justin selects the wood in person to ensure proper quality and plain-sawn grain orientation, so supply can be inconsistent. We do our best to keep these options available, but occasionally we may need to temporarily disable them until more material becomes available.

Yes, we have made stocks from laminate blanks in the past and they have turned out great. However, we do not currently have a cost-effective source for this material. If you’re interested in ordering a stock made from a laminated blank, please email us with details about your project.

Please note that custom laminate blanks we’ve ordered before (CWP Wood Products) can be expensive and often have a long lead time. That said, if you’re interested, reach out and we’ll do our best to accommodate your needs.

Our stocks are finished using Birchwood Casey® Tru-Oil®. Tru-Oil is a durable, forgiving finish that can be easily touched up and repaired (unlike polyurethane or epoxy-based finishes).

For general maintenance, we recommend applying a furniture-grade paste wax (such as Minwax or Johnson’s) during routine gun cleaning. Apply the wax liberally using a circular motion, allow it to dry, then buff it off with a cotton cloth.

To remove light scratches or small blemishes, lightly rub the area with #0000 steel wool in the direction of the grain, then apply paste wax as described above.

Yes, we can provide a stock without finish and can supply it fully sanded and ready for finishing. It’s important to apply a finish in a timely manner, since bare wood is more susceptible to swelling, warping, or deformation in humid environments, so sealing the wood promptly is critical. We also offer unfinished stocks at a discounted rate—please reach out to us for more details if you’re interested in this option.

As standard, we typically build our stocks with a 13.25”–14.00” length of pull, but we can custom make any length of pull. When placing a custom build order, simply include your desired length of pull in the Special Instructions section.

A cheek riser has been requested and made for several customers, but we have not added it as a standard option at this time. If you’re interested in a cheek riser, please reach out to us for more details and pricing.

It is possible but not recommended. Our butt plates are “grind-to-fit” (sanded in) during the build process, and while the butt plate profile is generally consistent from stock to stock, there can be slight variations in width and height. Because of this, it does not match a perfectly uniform standard like many non-wood stocks on the market. There are many slip-on butt pads available, but we do not have experience with them and cannot make specific fitment recommendations.

Yes, we have shipped to several countries. Please reach out to us with the country you live in and we can confirm whether we’re able to ship there. Due to higher international shipping costs, we do charge a small surcharge to help cover the additional expense. The buyer is responsible for any customs, duties, or tariff-related charges, so please review any potential added costs associated with importing our product into your country.

We don’t run sales, but we sometimes list discounted repaired stocks with minor cosmetic/natural defects. Active military/veterans and repeat customers can contact us for available discounts.
